Overview

Petronas is a global energy company committed to producing the energy needed to advance society sustainably.

In partnership with Boston Consulting Group, Digital Ventures, we shipped multiple flagship products over a 5-year period. This included frictionless digital payments at over 1,500 fuel stations, fraud prevention for B2B fuel delivery and repair process digitization.

Setel

Setel is Malaysia’s first petrol e-payment solution, enabling touchless fuel and food purchases via mobile app at over 1,500 fuel stations across the country.

Petronas faced a growing issue of long lines at fuel stations due to customers walking inside to pay with cash.  The alternative was to pay with a debit card at the pump but this placed a 4-day hold on funds which was not practical for lower-income customers.

We delivered a cashless e-wallet solution, Setel, that solved the cash problem by enabling "tap-to-pay" at the pump without placing a hold on customer funds. We also enabled customers to order food directly to their car supercharging the "Mesra" loyalty and rewards program.

We led the architecture and development of Setel’s backend, built the mobile applications, designed the touchscreen kiosk for food ordering, and implemented backend monitoring and reporting systems. We also managed the "build vs. buy" technical evaluation for the Digital Banking License that was required by the Malaysian government.

ROVR

ROVR is a B2B fuel delivery service that prevents fuel theft and saves fleet customers time and money.

Petronas was plagued with a fuel theft problem due to delivery drivers dispensing fuel to unauthorized parties such as friends and family. This proved impossible to track as there was no monitoring system in place.

ROVR solved this fraud problem by outfitting fuel trucks with a digital pump controller that the delivery driver must unlock by scanning a QR code on the vehicle receiving fuel. This validates the fuel dispensing session and records telemetry data including time, date, GPS location and volume of fuel dispensed for a detailed audit trail.

We led the architecture and development of the ROVR MVP including the mobile apps for ROVR delivery drivers. These apps are used for route planning and appointment scheduling as well as unlocking the digital pump controllers on fuel trucks to log all fueling session data and to prevent theft.

RepairWhiz

RepairWhiz was launched to digitize the repair process at Petronas’ 1,500+ fuel stations.

Fuel stations were losing $3,000 per day per pump when customers forgot to remove the fuel nozzle before driving away. It took 3 days on average to repair a pump due to the manual dispatching of repair requests which was done via phone calls and WhatsApp chat. Other common issues such as broken tire inflators were also impacting the customer experience.
‍‍
RepairWhiz simplified the repair process by providing station operators with intuitive visual guides to troubleshoot issues and to instantly dispatch a request to an approved vendor. This minimized the workload for station operators and reduced the repair lead times from 3 days to less than 1 day.

We designed and built a fully-functional MVP of RepairWhiz within three months, including a mobile application for fuel station operators and service vendors to manage repairs, and admin and reporting dashboard for management to measure progress with the goal of zero downtime.
